A Copper clad renal unit separated from the Northern Centre for Cancer Treatment via a glazed Atrium, which links to the main hospital.
Both parts of the building are arranged around a central courtyard, maximising natural daylight and offering useful external space for visitors and staff.
The building contains 9 Radiotherapy linac bunkers which were made out of Leadite blocks. The building was designed with great care and consideration to the patients psychological experience. Natural daylight, connection to the outside have been allied with a design which disposed of the linac ‘maze’.
Specialist equipment inside includes the UK’s first ever Primatom™ and one of the very first TomoTherapy® available to the NHS.

A 270 bed tertiary children’s hospital serving Liverpool, the north-west and the whole of the UK. The design brief is to create a unique world class healing environment for children and their families.
The concept of the building was a jewel sitting in the park and radiating out to offer unobstructed views out towards the regenerated park and beyond. The building was designed to have a minimal footprint, therefore to maximise the amount of green space which can be enjoyed by all visitors of the hospital.
A stunning roof garden was one of the main features, offering the largest planted external roof garden in Europe, and a place for staff, visitors and patients to enjoy. Within the entrance the discovery centre was designed to be the iconic element which no one would forget.
With its curvaceous timber form and its function to break down vertical barriers and provide a range of exiting spaces for learning and discovery, promoting the community of Alder Hey Health Park. The project was completed for the PFI bid, which unfortunately came 2nd to a scheme by BDP.
Losing a PFI bid is pretty hard, however its great to know the hospital that the area needs is almost finished construction. To check out the new hospital designed by BDP with Laing O’Rourke click here

Info
The competition brief asked for a cancer centre design that would be of high architectural quality, flexible to fit on various size sites and one which creates a strong sense of place.
Our design was based around a concept of a series of treatment houses, arranged around a central lounge space.
A striking coppers spiral roof defines the entrance and wraps around the central hearth to create the light lounge space.
The design aimed to focus un modular thinking by utilising a versatile 10.8m grid. This offers the building the ability to be adaptable over time to changes in the way cancer treatment is delivered.
The winning scheme was designed by BDP. The Ark Cancer Centre Charity and is currently looking to raise £5m to help get the centre built. Donate here

Info
The project was worked on at 2 occasions. Firstly A+A were asked to create an OBC design that could be taken to the market as the basis for a PFI. This was lead by Director John Cooper at Anshen + Allen for Laing O’Rourke. I lead the shell and core team and produced the BIM model and visuals.
When this project finally went to the market we teamed up with John Cooper architecture to form a bid team under Laing O’Rourke. Unfortunately this project stopped as a PFI, awaiting the results of the 2015 elections.

Info
The brief asked for 100,000m2 of services to be delivered through a world class design for a children’s hospital in Riyadh. The design consists of a ‘high-tech plinth separated from the inpatient wards by a social floor. The corner site gives the design presence from the main road as well as a campus focused side to the building.
A street atrium garden runs the length of the site separating the treatment and public functions.
Innovative external shading clads glass wards while the curved hyperboloid roof gives the building a unique feel while also offering solar shading to the ward gardens. Feature columns collect water from the roof which can be recycled to be used by the building.
